Is there anything more beautiful than seeing an animal return where they belong?

Throwback Thursday to this incredible olive ridley sea turtle’s return home.

Seven months ago, she was released back into the ocean after recovering from a devastating injury, when the bill of a sailfish pierced straight through her shell. It took complex surgery and weeks of dedicated care to help her heal, but she made a full recovery.

And when release day came, she wasn’t in any rush. In true turtle fashion, she took her time making her way back to the sea.

He was only two years old - a helpless baby orangutan found alone, terrified, and trapped in a tiny cage in an illegal gold mining area in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. His name is Randy. When a joint team from the BKSDA West Kalimantan and our partners YIARI reached him, they found him living in heartbreaking conditions. The miner who kept him had built a crude cage barely big enough for Randy to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, his small body weak and undernourished. Beneath his soft fur, our partners discovered signs of an old fracture - a healed break on his leg, proof that Randy had suffered a serious traumatic incident before his rescue. Randy’s story is the tragic result of human activity pushing deeper into orangutan habitat. As forests are destroyed and land is cleared for illegal mining, orangutans lose their homes - and their safety. When a baby is found alone, it almost always means his mother is gone, caught in the crossfire of habitat loss and human conflict. Randy is now at YIARIs rehabilitation center, but this is only the very beginning for him. His recovery will be long, difficult, and incredibly costly. He’s receiving the basic medical care and nutrition he was denied for so long but learning how to be an orangutan again will take years of patient, specialized support.
