This tiny baby orangutan is thought to be just ONE to TWO MONTHS old.
On September 8, baby Noni and her mother, Mama Noni, were rescued from community plantations in West Kalimantan after wildfires cut them off from the remaining forest.
A major fire was burning just 200 meters from the rescue area. With their route back to the forest blocked, orangutans in the area had been forced to move between plantations in search of food and shelter, bringing them closer to people and putting them at even greater risk.
For a baby this young, her mom is everything.
Mama Noni is estimated to be around 13 to 15 years old. During treatment, her body temperature reached 39.4°C and she was breathing rapidly. The medical team gave her IV fluids, oxygen, and cooling compresses while closely monitoring both mom and baby.
Thankfully, tiny Noni continued nursing from her mom after the rescue, which is especially important given how completely dependent she is at such a young age.
Both are now temporarily safe at YIARI’s Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, where they are receiving care and will continue to be closely monitored.
Once the fires have subsided and conditions are safe, the team will assess suitable habitat so they can return to the wild.
Their rescue was carried out jointly by the Ministry of Forestry, BKSDA West Kalimantan, and our partners, YIARI.
