When Karmele Llano Sánchez, CEO of YIARI, first discovered Jojo, he was chained in a backyard just meters from an open sewer. Forgotten, filthy, and frightened, Jojo had endured years of suffering. For Karmele, that moment was life-changing - and it became the beginning of something far bigger.
What started with one orangutan in desperate need grew into the creation of YIARI’s entire orangutan rescue and rehabilitation programme. Today, hundreds of orangutans have been given a second chance because of the spark Jojo lit all those years ago.
