Do you know what pacing means for a bear? It’s not normal. It’s trauma. It’s what happens when their mind breaks from stress, boredom and misery. Imagine how many times Beau walked that same few metres of filthy concrete, over and over again, trapped in that cage while tourists pointed and laughed.

Beau has been rescued by FPWC, but his body is frail, his health is failing, and he urgently needs medical treatment, proper food and round-the-clock care. This is going to be long, hard, and very costly.

He was only two years old - a helpless baby orangutan found alone, terrified, and trapped in a tiny cage in an illegal gold mining area in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. His name is Randy. When a joint team from the BKSDA West Kalimantan and our partners YIARI reached him, they found him living in heartbreaking conditions. The miner who kept him had built a crude cage barely big enough for Randy to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, his small body weak and undernourished. Beneath his soft fur, our partners discovered signs of an old fracture - a healed break on his leg, proof that Randy had suffered a serious traumatic incident before his rescue. Randy’s story is the tragic result of human activity pushing deeper into orangutan habitat. As forests are destroyed and land is cleared for illegal mining, orangutans lose their homes - and their safety. When a baby is found alone, it almost always means his mother is gone, caught in the crossfire of habitat loss and human conflict. Randy is now at YIARIs rehabilitation center, but this is only the very beginning for him. His recovery will be long, difficult, and incredibly costly. He’s receiving the basic medical care and nutrition he was denied for so long but learning how to be an orangutan again will take years of patient, specialized support.
