In combination knitting, stitches will be mounted on your needle with the right leg in back and the left leg in front after a purl row, instead of with the right leg in front and the left leg in back. Western patterns (America and Western Europe) assume that the right leg of the stitch will be in front, while combination knitting with left leg in front is more common in Eastern Europe. If you choose the combination method, it's important to know how your stitches are mounted so that you don't unintentionally twist stitches after a purl row.

Note: continental knitting is sometimes called "picking" and English style knitting is sometimes called "throwing."
