Here’s my Technics SA-R430 receiver from 1989. 100 watts per channel. It’s a surround unit and switches video.
I think my favorite part of this is the large VFD, all the buttons, the symmetrical square design, and the integrated equalizer with spectrum analyzer.
It takes things to the excess, as everyone did in the 80s.
I always liked this era of Technics, but I will say this one has a few complicated functions, but in general, it does a lot very well.
It’s an STK chip amp, so it needs more delicate care, especially avoidance of heat buildup.
Do you guys like the eye candy or not? I respect everyone’s opinion.
I’ll never forget shopping at MusiCraft in the Chicago land area in the late 80s and early 90s. I got to know one of the salesman really well, and I was young and was maybe 17, and he offered the following advice:
“Get a good looking home or car stereo. Make sure it has lots of lights. That way, you’ll get the girl into your car, or maybe into your bedroom quicker.”
