Syracuse’s Citizen Review Board is still taking complaints from neighbors, but it is not conducting its own independent investigations into possible police misconduct.
The Common Council’s Public Safety Committee met Wednesday to discuss the board’s status and whether its investigative work can resume.
The Citizen Review Board was created in 1993 to give residents a place outside the Syracuse Police Department to report concerns about officers. The board can investigate complaints, make findings and recommend policy changes, but it cannot suspend, fire or discipline an officer. The police chief has the final say on discipline.
