The Town of Clay voted Monday night to rename Plantation Boulevard after former town police commissioner Owen Honors, ending a process town leaders say began over concerns about the street name’s connection to slavery.
The Town Board approved changing the road to Owen Honors Boulevard following a public hearing at Clay Town Hall.
Town Supervisor Damian Ulatowski said officials were struck by how uncommon the use of “Plantation” was in the region.
“Do you not realize that the next closest state that uses the name Plantation is South Carolina?” Ulatowski said during the meeting. “There’s nothing between there. We were an island out there, which surprised and shocked a lot of us.”
Deputy Supervisor Joe Bick said the town began reconsidering the name after members of the community approached officials about its historical connotations.
