Part 1 - World 1 (up to Yoshi Star)

Total time - 3h 17m 50s
1 death @ Galaxy Generator

w/ Banktoad

Some general notes about this run:

About 3 minutes worth of mistakes total.

Additional time lost due to sub-optimal strategies:

1. I don't cancel Launch Star landings with the camera. I'm guessing this costs about 30 to 60 seconds throughout the run.

2. There is no need to switch to Luigi in Boulder Bowl: C'mere Goomba. Mario can do the shortcut easily from the top of the ramp by long-jumping to the left and spinning.

0:40 - Mushroom Kingdom

0:44 - The first pipe is a bit annoying. It seems if there is any delay in the preceding long-jump, Mario grazes the top-left corner of the pipe and gets slowed a little.

1:14 - Triple jumping over all of these crystals can potentially be about half-second faster than breaking them, but you have to double jump onto the floating blocks, which can be pretty hard to reach.

2:55 - 1.Sky Station 1 - 2m 1.43s (Comet Medal 1)

3:04 - Ideally, the Luma won't spin along with Mario and delay the initiation of its dialogue. I could never find a consistent way to do this without delaying Mario's spin.

3:19 - On the second planet, it's about 1 second faster to go along the top than the bottom.

4:13 - This triple jump is pretty easy. Turning the analog stick in time with the camera isn't as awkward as it might sound.

4:32 - The boss strategy is based on one by packattack and vallu111.

7:21 - 2.Sky Station 2 - 1m 47.18s

7:59 - It's possible to avoid the 1-Up in the cylinder, but I don't worry about it because it's pretty difficult to avoid touching a 1-Up mushroom throughout the run. The best way to avoid it is to wall-jump off the upper-left corner of the platform to jump over the mushroom.

There are faster ways to get through the inside of the cylinder, but finding a consistent strategy is difficult because there are so many moving parts. The approach I use is the safest I could find.

9:29 - There is a weird quirk with the Star Bits and Coin messages that appear at the end of every Star. I wasn't aware of this until I read yoshifan's commentary for his Galaxy 1 speed run:

"About the "You increased your Star Bit count" dialog: When you've collected less than about 30-40 star bits in a level, it's faster to let the star bits count down all the way before pressing A. If you press A sooner, you'll cancel the countdown, but it will make the dialog stay onscreen for an extra ~2/3rds of a second."

Galaxy 2 tracks your total Coin count as well, and the same observation applies.

10:09 - 3.Yoshi Star 1 - 1m 49.03s (Comet Medal 2)

I believe MAST3RLINKX was the first to discover infinite fluttering and upload a video of it to YouTube, though it seems a few other people independently found it as well.

10:58 - The infinite-flutter shortcut to the 3rd planet saves about 10 seconds. The most difficult part is the timing of the dismount. Dismounting too late can cause Mario to jump out of the planet's gravitational field and fall into the abyss.

11:40 - The ending is a bit sloppy because I think I got complacent; you can see me messing around a little on the lift.

13:03 - 4.Yoshi Star 2 - 1m 26.73s

13:17 - The infinite-flutter shortcut was found by ZFG. The angle is awkward, but I'm surprisingly consistent with it. At the beginning of the flutter, I usually tilt the analog stick at the 5 o'clock angle; when the camera moves, I pivot to the 1 o'clock angle. To avoid losing speed when the camera moves, don't rotate the analog stick too early. It seems to be better to wait until the camera is more than halfway done turning.

13:45 - Thanks to yoshifan for the boss strategy.
