3m 14.10s

This run isn't perfect, but I think I'll take it. Some of the long-jump landings are slow, and the landing on the first Floating Plate is bad; but the Bowser fight is more troublesome than I thought it would be, and the fight in this run is about as clean as I can hope for. 3m 13.xx is definitely possible with better execution.

0:15 - I have to end the fly-in scene at a fairly precise moment to position the platforms like this. I've never been able to long-jump all the way to the crystal, so I think this is near optimal. Most failed runs ended here either because I ran into a fireball or the platforms weren't positioned correctly.

I get the Life Mushroom for a shortcut at the Bowser statues.

0:30 - The only real mistake of this run, but it cost only about 0.3 seconds.

0:44 - It's actually possible to long-jump off the Whomp's foot here, but it's very difficult to do. I was lucky enough to pull it off in my Green Star 2 run:

0:50 - I go the idea of jumping off the meteorite from Q12546wer22. The extra height saves about 0.5 seconds when being pulled by the beam:

1:00 - I run to the corner so I can long-jump to the first Bowser statue without spinning. I first saw this shortcut used by ねぐろ (neguro) of Nico Video.

It's actually possible to do this shortcut without the Life Mushroom by spinning around on top of the first Bowser statue until Luigi recovers from the lava. I don't know how worthwhile this is, however, because I would need to get 2 coins to regain my health. One coin can be easily obtained before the Whomps, and the second coin would probably have to be obtained near the second checkpoint flag.

1:10 - The jump around the corner looks odd, but it happens so often it's almost automatic.

1:44 - There are a couple of very annoying things about the Bowser fight. The first is that you can't ground pound the meteorites too early; if you pound the meteorites too soon after Bowser punches the planet, the meteorites won't budge.

The second and far bigger problem is that jumping off the meteorite while it's rising sometimes causes Luigi to do a very short and awkward jump. Luigi will usually turn around during this jump, and you can't do a ground pound out of it. It happens somewhat randomly, but I'm pretty sure it's caused by Luigi transitioning between the planet and the meteorite's gravity. Jumping off near the top of the meteorite seems to prevent this problem.
