When the Strasburg Rail Road returned former Canadian National 0-6-0 7312 to operation as their number 31 in 1960, the railroad quickly became an established institution for steam train rides in the east. As the SRC operations expanded, other steam locomotives joined the roster with some staying and other leaving after a short time. Engines like Wilmington & Western 4-4-0 98, and Rail Tours 4-6-0 972 are seen on the property.

This video starts with views of the 31 during its first full season of operation in 1961, and then moves on to 1980 with both the 0-6-0 and 2-10-0 90 pulling the trains to Leaman Place Junction. In addition to the steam movements, former PRR GE 44-Tonner 33 is seen switching at East Strasburg and Leaman Place Junction. Also viewed at Leaman Place is Conrail freight and Amtrak action along the former mainline of the PRR, now Amtrak’s Keystone Corridor.

These 8mm and Super 8mm movies were shot by Don Kehl and John Filson and are now part of the collection of the Western Railway Museum. Editing and transfer of the video was done by Hunter Lohse.
