The Denver and Rio Grande Western became one of the last narrow gauge operations still going strong by the 1960s. In 1961, noted railroad photographer Don Kehl took his 8mm move camera out to Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico to document the regular day to day operations on narrow gauge. You’ll see the main K-36 and K-37 workhorses as well as K-28 473 on the Silverton train, plus a trip over the Farmington Branch.
During the 70s and 80s sections of the railroad were reopened as the Cumbres and Toltec, and Durango and Silverton narrow gauge railroads, where future generations can still experience the thrill of slim gauge steam in the Rockies!
The 8mm film is part of the collection of the Western Railway Museum and was transferred by Hunter Lohse. Thumbnail taken by Steven J. Brown.

Based in Hartford, Wisconsin, Soo Line 1003 operates on selective occasions. On the weekend of November 12-13, 2022, the locomotive was steamed up to make an appearance on the Hartford Santa Train and then a Trains Magazine photo charter the following day. 1003 shatters the otherwise quiet atmosphere of the Wisconsin farmlands with its thunderous bark as it hustles a fast-moving freight train along Wisconsin & Southern rails.
Since being restored to operation in 1996, 1003 has operated at several different railroads in Wisconsin and has made special runs to Chicago. It is one of few steam engines that can almost always be seen pulling a freight train whenever it runs.")

The Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad operates 24 steam trains on two miles out of Cripple Creek, CO. Running through the rugged Rocky Mountain scenery provides many impressive sights on the former Florence & Cripple Creek right of way towards Victor.
The locomotive featured is 0-4-0T 3, a 1927-built Porter tank engine. The 3 is the only American-built steam engine on the roster.")
