The Albany & Eastern Railroad of Lebanon, Oregon operates in the Willamette Valley on a mix of former Spokane, Portland & Seattle and Southern Pacific branchlines, forming about 64 miles total between Lebanon and Albany. The A&E has had success operating freight since the 1990s.
Operations recently expanded to add passenger rail excursions with freshly restored Santa Maria Valley 2-6-2 205. This 1924-built Prairie type, having gone through a length restoration, was brought to Albany & Eastern for use on their Santiam River Excursions. The locomotive was long home in Northern California, but otherwise is right at home in Pacific Northwestern logging trains.

Based in Hartford, Wisconsin, Soo Line 1003 operates on selective occasions. On the weekend of November 12-13, 2022, the locomotive was steamed up to make an appearance on the Hartford Santa Train and then a Trains Magazine photo charter the following day. 1003 shatters the otherwise quiet atmosphere of the Wisconsin farmlands with its thunderous bark as it hustles a fast-moving freight train along Wisconsin & Southern rails.
Since being restored to operation in 1996, 1003 has operated at several different railroads in Wisconsin and has made special runs to Chicago. It is one of few steam engines that can almost always be seen pulling a freight train whenever it runs.")
