Steve Young's career ended in Week 3 of the 1999 NFL season during a Monday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium on September 27, 1999.

With about 30 seconds remaining in the first half and San Francisco leading 17-0, Young threw an incomplete pass after a missed blitz pickup by running back Lawrence Phillips. Young was blindsided by Cardinals safety Aeneas Williams, who delivered a massive, unblocked hit. Young's head collided with offensive lineman Dave Fiore on the way down, knocking Young temporarily unconscious.

Young walked off the field under his own power but was diagnosed with a concussion. Although he wanted to play in the second half, head coach Steve Mariucci kept him out. The 49ers went on to win the game 24-10, but the concussion—the seventh of his career—forced Young to miss the rest of the season and ultimately led to his retirement in 2000.
