On August 28, 1999, St. Louis Rams quarterback Trent Green suffered a devastating, season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee during a preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.

Green, who was recently signed as the Rams' prized free-agent starter, went down after a low hit from Chargers safety Rodney Harrison. The hit occurred just as Green released the ball, with Harrison's legs getting caught underneath Green's knee. Green had to be carted off the field, and he required surgery once the swelling subsided.

This defining moment dramatically altered NFL history. With Green out for the year, head coach Dick Vermeil famously announced that the team would "rally around Kurt Warner," who was the backup. Warner stepped in, led the "Greatest Show on Turf" offense, and guided the Rams to their first Super Bowl victory.
