STEVE ATWATER COMMITS MANSLAUGHTER 😳
Denver Broncos Hall of Fame safety Steve Atwater famously knocked out his own teammate, cornerback Randy Hilliard, during the closing moments of Super Bowl XXXII on January 25, 1998.
With only 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Denver Broncos held a slim 31-24 lead over the Green Bay Packers. Facing a critical 3rd-and-6 on the Denver 39-yard line, Packers quarterback Brett Favre threw a pass over the middle to wide receiver Robert Brooks near the 10-yard line.
As the ball arrived, Atwater launched himself left-shoulder-first to break up the play. The ball fell incomplete, but Atwater’s momentum plowed directly through Brooks and straight into the upper chest and head of his teammate, Randy Hilliard, who was also converging in coverage. The collision was so violent that it effectively knocked out three players at once: Atwater himself, Hilliard, and Brooks.
Both Atwater and Hilliard were severely shaken up and required medical attention on the field, the game was temporarily halted. Under NFL rules, because the defensive injuries occurred inside the final two minutes of the game, the Denver Broncos were charged with their final remaining timeout.
