With 30 seconds left in the first half, Cardinals safety Aeneas Williams delivered a unblocked, blindsided hit after a missed blitz pickup, knocking Young unconscious as his head collided with lineman Dave Fiore.

Running back Lawrence Phillips missed a blitz pickup, allowing Aeneas Williams a clean path to blindside Young just as he released an incomplete pass. Young crashed to the turf and his helmet struck teammate Dave Fiore's leg, leaving him temporarily motionless and dazed on the ground.
