Episode: "Where Silence Has Lease"
The Enterprise is held up by a curious anomaly, a "hole in space" that appears to contradict numerous established laws of physics. This minor curiosity soon turns into a genuine threat when this region expands around the Enterprise, trapping the starship presenting no avenue of escape.
After a little tail-chasing we discover the alien being responsible for trapping the Enterprise, Nagilum; this zone of space appears to be his creation, to serve him as a sort of vast laboratory within which he is capable of manipulating reality, the laws of nature, people, set up situations so that he can observe and learn how his "test subjects" will react. Of course it doesn't take Nagilum very long to find fascination with what we humans call "death".
