Episode: "The Outrageous Okona"
The Enterprise comes to the aid of a freighter captain Thadium Okona to assist him in some minor repairs to his ship; during his visit to the Enterprise he encounters Commander Data and attempts to try out a joke on him. Disappointed that he literally needs the joke spelled out for him, Data commits himself to learning about comedy and seeing if he is capable of developing for himself a sense of humour.
With Guinan as his advisor and sounding board for his material, Data visits the holodeck to seek out an appropriate teacher for his humour lessons; a stand up comedian from a 20th century style comedy club.
