Star Fox is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, and this is my full review of the remake, covering gameplay, visuals, performance, sound, story and replayability, played entirely in HDR.
Star Fox is a faithful remake of the legendary Star Fox 64, developed by Velan Studios. The core of the game has you flying through seven stages per run, always beginning at Corneria and ending at Venom or Venom 2 depending on your route, with your performance deciding which stages open up next across a remarkable 25 different routes. The on rails shooting is easy to pick up, broken up by All Range Mode sections that let you fully control your Arwing and hunt enemies down yourself.
Visually the remake goes for a realistic sci-fi style with character designs that call back to the original SNES box art puppets, running at a sharp 1080p with genuinely excellent HDR that rivals Metroid Prime 4. Performance is a locked 60fps throughout with no crashes or bugs. The orchestral rearrangement of the Star Fox 64 score sounds fantastic, though the absence of the classic SNES Corneria theme is a real shame for longtime fans. The story adds a new prologue covering the betrayal of James McCloud by Pigma Dengar, and there are two endings depending on whether you take the harder routes to Venom 2 for the true ending.
Replayability is where the remake shines, with 16 stages to unlock across multiple playthroughs, challenge mode, and a genuinely fun 4v4 online multiplayer battle mode that gives the game real longevity. The one thing holding it back from a perfect score is the lack of any new stages. Had those been added, this would have been a 10 out of 10. As it stands, Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 earns a 9.5 out of 10, and comes highly recommended.
