South of Midnight is one of the most visually and tonally distinctive games to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2, and this is a full review covering everything you need to know before picking it up. Developed by Compulsion Games and published by Xbox Game Studios, South of Midnight puts you in the role of Hazel Flood, a young woman navigating the American Deep South through grief, folk magic and Southern Gothic mythology.
This review covers gameplay and the weaver magic combat system, the story and its deeply rooted Southern American folklore, the stunning and unique stop motion inspired art style, the one of a kind blues and gospel soundtrack, replayability via chapter select, and how the game holds up technically on Nintendo Switch 2 at 30fps.
South of Midnight is a linear action adventure that prioritises narrative and atmosphere over open world freedom, and it largely delivers on that vision with confidence. The combo system has room to improve and the 30fps cap makes the stop motion aesthetic more noticeable on Switch 2, but the creature encounters, the mythology and the music elevate the whole experience into something genuinely memorable.
If you enjoy story driven action adventure games, Southern Gothic atmosphere or folklore and mythology, this one is absolutely worth your time.
