Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, and this is a full technical port review covering performance, visuals, audio, gameplay and replayability after a complete 76 hour playthrough on Switch 2.
On the technical side, Rebirth renders natively at 540p on Switch 2, upscaled to 1080p using DLSS. The upscaling does an impressive job across most of the game, with hair being the main weak point where the strain shows. The game targets 30fps and holds it stably for the vast majority of play, with one specific trouble spot in the Temple of the Ancients during Yuffie's section where heavy particle effects from magic hitting large enemy groups can pull the frame rate down. Pop-in is present but unobtrusive in normal play, load times into larger open world areas can run around 30+ seconds, and HDR options are more limited compared to Final Fantasy VII Remake. One minor gameplay quirk worth noting is an occasional invisible loading wall when moving too fast on a chocobo in larger areas.
What the Switch 2 version delivers fully intact is the combat, the story, the spectacular soundtrack reimagining the original 1997 score through orchestral and rock arrangements, and the outstanding voice acting across the entire cast. The control scheme on Switch 2 maps excellently, with attack, dodge and commands on face buttons and companion shortcuts on ZL and ZR. The core experience that made FF7 Rebirth a landmark RPG is here in full, now in portable form.
Having played FF7 Rebirth across PS5, PS5 Pro and PC for around 300 hours combined, the Switch 2 port earns its place as a genuinely worthwhile way to experience one of the best games of this generation.
