We are getting into the soccer spirit with the New England Revolution! ⚽🦭
While Farley the sea lion might look like he’s showing off some skilled soccer “tricks,” these sessions are actually an important part of our sea lions’ training and enrichment. Using a soccer ball as a novel enrichment item encourages play, helps maintain motor skills and agility, and provides both mental and physical stimulation.
Training behaviors also help our Animal Care team build strong relationships with the sea lions while supporting their overall well-being, and play is a huge part of that! Sometimes enrichment looks like introducing a new object (like a soccer ball), sometimes it’s reinforcing behaviors through interaction and engagement, and sometimes it’s simply spending time together with the animals.
So, soccer is enriching for humans and for sea lions, too! ⚽💙
