Say hello to Marie, our (lucky) green moray eel in the Giant Ocean Tank! 🍀💚

Marie is named for pioneering oceanographer Marie Tharp, who helped create the first maps of the Atlantic Ocean floor. She also shares a middle name with one of our longtime Aquarium divers, making the name extra special!

Before Marie was released into the Giant Ocean Tank, resident eel Thomas spent much of his time resting beside (and sometimes curled around!) her acclimation barrel, as if welcoming the newcomer.

Though Thomas and Marie are both moray eels, their feeding styles couldn’t be more different! Our Giant Ocean Tank aquarists tell us that Thomas is calm and deliberate, while Marie is quick and decisive—lunging at the target stick with a lightning-fast strike, a bit like a snake.

This green GOT newcomer is definitely the Aquarium’s lucky charm this St. Patrick’s Day!
