The calm before the storm doesn’t necessitate that the storm is destructive, or that it’s powerful; only that its arrival is imminent. “Deployed” consistently upgrades and reinvents itself through its ‘calm’ period, sustained through the first chorus and the second verse (where Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano hops on vocal duty, and a spaceship-summoning synthesizer colors the sky). By the second chorus, the balanced vocal act comes together as one and the two dance around the instrumental as it deconstructs, finally falling by the wayside entirely.
Elemental grooves feel harder to come by these days. Songs that truly get into your bones and make you shake your ass are few and far between the titanic, robotic synthesizers and drum kits of Top 40. What sir Was and Little Dragon have created together amounts to another fundamentally good, groovy song that doubles as a firestarter on the dance floor. The cascading piano keys bellow and uplift everything around them, taking Yukimi’s near-falsetto into even higher registers.
Little Dragon are masters of cyclical rhythm where songs are sequential. Deploying this vision to sir Was’ funky, throwback beats and slight rock perversion creates a tight, polished, successful single that looks pocket-sized and ends up being larger than life. “Deployed” accomplishes its mission to command you to shake your ass as it previews sir Was’ album ‘Holding On To A Dream’. Even the handclaps echoing through from the back are appreciated en route to solidifying this solid, funky groove.
