"Fake ID" by Riton & Kah-Lo

Curated by: Brendan Boland

Spotify: bit.ly/FakeIDRitonKahLo

Genre: #house

Just as Justice’s "The Party" provided the pre-party anthem for every electro house playlist, "Fake ID" works to capture the angst and excitement that comes just as you step into the night. Youth defined through rebellion, the song urges you to move forward and conquer, no matter the cost or consequence.

“If the man don’t dance, he's done…now can I get a coke with my rum?”: Kah-Lo’s vocals are familiar to a younger MIA. Her tone is commanding and self-determined. She’s the type of friend you want to have exploring a city after dark: calm, collected, and always down to chase the weird. The Nigerian singer-songwriter first teamed up with British producer, Henry Smithson, a.k.a Riton, for their Grammy nominated "Rinse and Repeat"; since, the two have released a full length EP, Foreign Ororo, which highlights all manner of sounds of summer. Their collaborations seem to steal the energy of dancehall and the bounce of tech house.

"Fake ID" captures the same tone of their original collaboration, yet with a new edge. No longer do Kah-Lo and Riton settle for a well layered club beat. Riton’s techno construction perfectly compliments the attitude and dismissive nature of Kah-Lo’s lyrics. His darker tones exude the energy that comes from spending a night devastated by bad decisions that turn into great stories.

Some may recognize RIton for his work as Cate Blanche with DJ Medhi on Ed Banger Records. While he’s left disco infused electro house, Riton’s newest work, released on his own Riton Time label, remains true to a sound and style that beg to be heard on the dance floor.
