I was expecting there to be mainly two themes in the Fantastic Four score, but I was pleasantly surprised that Giacchino created a theme for the Silver Surfer herself. In my opinion, it's the biggest delight of the entire score for me. While the main theme is rightfully iconic and glorious, this is a theme with all the pathos and atmosphere this character deserves. Her theme is a five note motif that gets built off of and expanded into a fuller melody, starting off the score on moody woodwinds and chilling vocals. There's also the subtle presence of an organ as well, which helps with the aforementioned atmosphere. With the way her theme plays out, there's this cosmic holiness that I feel is more prevalent here than with Galactus' theme; this feeling of complete neutrality, a being of the stars that can be either good or bad. As with most Giacchino Marvel villain themes, it functions both as a great villain theme but also as something more sympathetic. Her theme gets played on a solo violin and piano, showing sides to her previously unseen. There's a greater tragedy and longing her theme perfectly conveys in this tone, and it makes the bigger orchestral flourishes more rewarding; it's the reclamation of her humanity and ownership over her own destiny. The action material for Silver Surfer is also incredible, with rapid percussion underscoring these proud and loud chants of her theme. All in all, this is an absolutely incredible theme, and I feel like Giacchino's ability to show dimensions to a character through the reprisals of a given theme is incomparable in modern film scoring.
