Sharpe's Eagle was published in 1981 and launched the very succesful Sharpe series. Richard Sharpe is an orphan who joined the army and worked his way up through the ranks with the aid of the future Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley.
In Sharpe's Eagle a new commander in the peninsular war threatens both his career and his life. He must capture a French eagle to save both while also seeking revenge on the men who assaulted his girlfriend.
There are 22 books in the series with a 23rd due next year.
