I review Glenn Glerry's translation of Willi Heinrich's 1960 war novel The Crumbling Fortress. Refugees from the different factions involved in World War Two converge on a mountain top fortress and abandoned village in order to escape the dangers they face. There they find they are right in the path of the war they sought to avoid as the German army retreats into the mountains. The first English language edition of the book was published in 1964.
