September 17: Rick Bernstein and Bridgit Van Belleghem: The Past and Present of Racial Covenants
--submitted by Jessika Kasten
During a recent Madison Rotary event, Rick Bernstein, Executive Director of the Dane County Historical Society and Bridgit Van Belleghem, a Senior Planner from Dane County Planning and Development, discussed "The Past and Present of Racial Covenants.”
These covenants, which restrict property ownership based on race/ethnicity/religion, remain on titles for around 4,000 Madison homes. Dane County urges residents to visit danecountyplanning.com/prejudice-in-places to check their property’s history. While covenants cannot be removed from titles, homeowners may add a denouncement at the top, formally rejecting and refusing to perpetuate these discriminatory restrictions.
