To study sample under Scanning electron microscope, the sample is usually coated with metals such as gold or platinum. The process by which a thin layer of metal is deposited on sample is known as supttering. For this we use plasma of argon ions. When argon ions travelling at high velocity, collides with metal surface of gold or platinum, the metal atoms are released. These metal atoms that are released free, gradually gets deposited on the sample. Once deposited the sample can be studied under Scanning Electron Microscope.
