See all my gear at thepodcastersstudio.com/gear. The Rode VideoMic Pro is a great on-camera microphone for DSLR video or any other camera that has a 3.5mm microphone input. But what about plugging the VMP directly into an audio recorder so that you can use the microphone close to the source of your audio (the person speaking)? I test this out and it's boring..unless you're into audio and video production;)
To record great sounding audio for your videos, often times, the single biggest factor will be how close you can get the microphone to the person who is talking. In this video I take the Rode VideoMic Pro off the top of the video camera (in this case a Canon DSLR) and I plug it into an Edirol audio recorder in order to get the microphone closer to my mouth and thus achieve much better audio than if I left the mic. on the camera and it was further away.
Any audio recorder that has a 1/8" (3.5mm) microphone input will allow you to do this setup with the Rode VideoMic Pro. I also really like the Zoom H1 which is less than $100* (podhelp.me/ZoomH1WhiteZon) and produces great sounding, clean audio.
