Palindrome (2005-06, 07), 14m50s
24-track tape
Composer: Robert Normandeau
Commission: IMEB
Premiere: June 7, 2006, Festival Synthèse (Bourges, Cher, France)
To Lorraine
A palindrome is a succession of graphical signs (letters, numbers, symbols...) that can be read from left to right as well as from right to left. "Laval" is an example of a word palindrome. The French writer Georges Pérec (1936-1982) is famous for his 1247 words palindrome written in 1969, Le grand palindrome, which was only surpassed in number of words in July 2004 by Le palindrome de Saint-Gilles by Pol Kools which is made of 2119 words. In music some examples of this can be found in the cancrizan canon.
The palindrome referred to by the title belongs to the form as well as to the sound material itself. Everything was made in such a way that the listening experience would be the same in both directions, from the sounds themselves to the general structure of the work, through the channels of the stereo files, the order of the 24 tracks spatialization, the levels of the different curves of the mixing and the musical phrases.
The form is identical, symmetrical in both directions and it is made of two mixings of the same 96 tracks whose «weight», instead of the exact similarity, is the same from the beginning to the end and vice verse. The only difference between the two mixings that I have introduced for musical reasons, is that the first mixing is a decrescendo that begins with a tutti which is gradually filtered to the high frequency register while the second one is a crescendo that begins with the low frequency register gradually increased to a tutti. That could be considered a vertical palindrome!
Palindrome is part of a cycle of deep listening works which propose a listening of the inside of the sound material, instead of listening to many different and articulated series of events, like one can find in most of the electroacoustic music works, as well as in my own works. There are very few events to hear in this work, which is made of predictable changes and a slow evolution over time characteristic this kind of work. It really makes sense in a deep listening attitude present in a concert situation, the ideal place of the ritual.
Palindrome was realized in 2005 in the composer's studio as well as in the studios of the Institut international de musique électroacoustique de Bourges (IMEB) and in 2006 in the Elektronisches Studios of the Technische Universität Berlin (Germany). The work was premiered on June 7, 2006 at the Synthèse festival in Bourges (France). The work was later revised in 2007. Palindrome was commissioned by the IMEB. Thanks to Delphine Measroch, accordion; Émilie Laforest, Gregory Llady, voices; the organ and the bells of the Bourges cathedral. Thanks to Françoise Barrière and Folkmar Hein.

The substance of this extraordinary piece of music was developed from the actual sound of a spinning top, a melodic rhythmic pattern, and simple electronic fluxes. There is an inversion of traditional modes of musical composition. While the high-pitches and the rhythmic swing remain imperturbably constant which means it can be heard as minimalist variations (stressing, de-synchronisation, variations in density and mobility, etc.) create constant movement, turning the sound material into something virtually living, constantly reaffirming itself, always the same yet renewed. Out attention is caught in a sound nest, defined in the bass by a rolling pedal, and in the treble by uninterrupted cooing, voluble an iridescent, that continuously swells and falls off. But if this music is a lullaby, it is the lullaby of the tiger! This protection conceals ferocity and threat all the more powerful because it does not show itself in the light of day. It is only interrupted by big sounds of rubbing rolling arc, passing slowly, and sometime triggering electric outbursts rising in zigzags. During these sound rifts (which the author calls skies), the inexorable comes to an end and suddenly freedom and lightness surges forth. (Bayle)

![Farthest South - Spheres & Constellations [Excerpt] (2013)
On their sophomore album Spheres & Constellations, Israeli psychedelic improv group Farthest South sound like a completely different band. Whereas their debut Omens & Talismans generated a somewhat free-jazz meets electronica vibe, the new recording by the exploratory trio comes from a radically different aesthetic. With no rhythmic foundation to speak of, Spheres & Constellations instead treads a path of ambient synth washes, abstract harmonies, impressionistic melodic fragments, processed vocal samples and mystical drones. Influenced by a highly personal and spiritual experience shared by the band members during one long night spent in the Israeli desert, S&C is the culmination of a collective transformation on the most basic level.
Consisting of one nearly 35 minute long track, the album tells the story of a journey into inner space through 3 spheres of consciousness external, internal and eternal to the essence of Being, that place at the core of every human where time and space hold no meaning. This is an expedition to reach the archetypal home, the home we all carry within us, by navigating non-physical constellations not those which are formed by stars, but rather personal ones, the ones all individuals create for themselves and which stem from the very ability we all possess to choose our own destiny.

I wanted to oppose the affirmative and energetic conception of the musical discourse which emerges from Ondes / Arborescences with a sinuous and obsessive sound world, interrupted by silence and by the sporadic appearance of menacing events, such as the numerous minute interior interruptions which bombard the spirit, taut with anguish.
In these landscapes, where the unspoken reigns, a thousand fears suddenly emerge under the pressure of an interior murmur. The mysteries of our spirit open up ancient, fratricidal debates, nourished by our entire existence. Certain among these reveal themselves to our consciousness in order to better continue their muted struggle; nothing is resolved. There are intimate landscapes on the condemned horizons, in the delicate, feverish atmospheres, landscapes consisting of sinuous shadows, even tremulous among a few fleeting glimmers.
Paysages intérieurs [Interior Landscapes] was produced in 1988 in the studios of the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal and premiered in May 1988 during a public concert at the Université de Montréal. Paysages intérieurs was awarded Second Prize at the 8th CBC National Competition for Young Composers (Ottawa, 1988), Second Prize at the 1989 International Newcomp Computer Music Competition (Boston, USA), and an Honorable Mention at the 11th Luigi Russolo International Competition (Varese, Italy, 1989).
