This Concerto for piano and orchestra n. 3 was composed between 1976 and 1977, as part of his work under the „Queen Sofla Scholarship“ awarded to Castillo by Madri City Council. The work was premiered in the Charles V Palace in the Alhambra Palace in Granada on 26 Juni 1978, by the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Enrique Garcia Asenio, and with Manuel Castillo himself as a Soloist. The composer commented in the programme notes of that concert: Among my compositions there are some piano pieces which clearly represent the stages of my evolution. Each of these moments corresponds to the composition of a concerto for piano and orchestra. Eight years passed between the first and the second, and eleven between the second and the third. Naturally, my language and technique have evolved, though perhaps less to the way I understand music, where I pay more attention to the result then the procedures used to achieve them. To sum up Castillos explanation of the formal structure of his work, it consists of four concise movements, to which cohesion is brought through a four note motif that is used to generate melody and harmony. The first freely recreates bi-thematic sonata form; the intermezzo has a lighter orchestration.
