Before he founded Machine Head, Robb Flynn was already making his mark on the Bay Area thrash metal scene.

In this first episode of my new Forbidden series, we go all the way back to the beginning of the band and the making of their legendary 1988 debut, Forbidden Evil. Originally formed as Forbidden Evil, the band emerged from the historic San Francisco Bay Area thrash scene alongside bands like Testament, Death Angel, and Vio-lence.

And yes… that Robb Flynn was there.

We'll look at Flynn's early role in the band, the underground demos that helped build Forbidden's reputation, the transition to the classic lineup, and how Flynn's songwriting contributions remained on some of the album's most important tracks.

We'll also break down the sound and key songs from Forbidden Evil, including "Chalice of Blood," "Through Eyes of Glass," "Off the Edge," "Forbidden Evil," and "Follow Me." Then we'll follow the band onto the road, including their European tour and legendary appearance at the Dynamo Open Air Festival.

This is the beginning of the Forbidden story and there's a lot more to come.

In the next episode, we'll look at the fallout from the tour, the lineup changes, and Twisted into Form, the Forbidden album that introduced me to the band and remains one of my favorite thrash albums of all time.

If you're a fan of Forbidden, Bay Area thrash, or Robb Flynn, make sure to subscribe and follow the series!
