What happens when a band becomes too extreme for television?
In 1991, Sepultura released Arise, an album that didn’t just push the boundaries of thrash and death metal… it shattered them. Recorded at Morrisound Recording with producer Scott Burns, Arise marked the moment these four musicians from Brazil transformed into a world-class metal machine.
But while the album was conquering the underground, controversy was brewing.
The music video for “Arise,” filmed in the brutal heat of Death Valley, featured disturbing apocalyptic imagery, including a crucified figure wearing a gas mask. The result? MTV banned the video, calling it too offensive and blasphemous for airplay.
And yet… that ban may have made Sepultura even bigger.
