Has Nervosa truly reinvented themselves?
In today’s video, I dive into Slave Machine, the sixth studio album from the Brazilian-founded metal powerhouse, and one that signals a bold new era for the band. With Prika Amaral now fully stepping into the role of frontwoman, Nervosa pushes their sound further than ever before, blending crushing thrash with death metal aggression, tighter technicality, and even melodic vocal layers that add a whole new dimension.
This is my third time reviewing a Nervosa album on the channel, following Perpetual Chaos (2021) and Jailbreak (2023). Both albums marked major transitions, but Slave Machine feels like the moment where everything truly clicks.
From the tribal intensity of Impending Doom to the hook-driven title track, the atmospheric depth of Ghost Notes, and the relentless aggression of You Are Not A Hero, this album shows a band evolving without losing their identity. Tracks like Beast of Burden and Speak in Fire highlight both the raw power and the darker, more ominous direction the band is exploring.
I also break down the standout guitar work from Helena Kotina, whose technical precision and razor-sharp riffs play a huge role in shaping the album’s modern yet old-school sound. Having shared the stage with legends like Alex Skolnick of Testament, her growth as a guitarist is on full display here.
Of course, no review is complete without looking at both sides, so I also discuss some of the criticisms, including the album’s adherence to thrash conventions, questions about song individuality, and production choices that may divide listeners.
So… is Slave Machine Nervosa’s ultimate evolution, or does it play things too safe?
