Was Ugly Noise a bold new direction for Flotsam and Jetsam or a mistake?
In this episode of my Flotsam and Jetsam history series, I take a look at Ugly Noise, the band's 2012 studio album. We start with a recap of the lineup changes from the previous episode before exploring the return of original drummer Kelly David Smith, the band's decision to crowdfund the album, and Jason Newsted's surprising involvement in the songwriting.
But Ugly Noise was a very different kind of Flotsam and Jetsam album. With a darker, more groove-oriented and experimental sound, the record divided fans. Why did some longtime listeners reject it? And why do others consider it one of the more interesting albums in the band's later catalog?
I'll also look at some unusual Flotsam and Jetsam trivia, Jason Ward's departure from the band, and set up the next chapter: No Place for Disgrace 2014 and the return of a familiar bass player.
