Was Prong’s Beg to Differ the first groove metal album?
Released in 1990, Beg to Differ found Prong taking the raw hardcore and metallic aggression of Force Fed and transforming it into something tighter, heavier, and far more rhythm-driven. The album arrived months before Pantera’s Cowboys from Hell, raising an intriguing question: did Prong get to groove metal first?
In this episode of my Prong album-by-album series, we look at the band’s move to Epic Records, the writing and recording of Beg to Differ, how the album evolved from Force Fed, its key tracks, MTV and Headbangers Ball exposure, critical and fan reception, and its commercial performance.
But the groove-metal question isn't quite that simple. We’ll also look at bands such as Exhorder, Excel, and White Zombie, whose music provides some serious competition for the title of groove-metal pioneers.
And just when Prong had established this new sound, they were about to change direction again.
Next up: Prove You Wrong: featuring new bassist Troy Gregory, formerly of Flotsam and Jetsam, and the beginning of Prong’s move toward a more industrial sound.
