River Blindness (Onchocerciasis) | Causes, Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

River Blindness (also known as Onchocerciasis) is an infection by the nematode (roundworm) Onchocerca volvulus, which can be transmitted by the bite of a black fly, often occurring near fast-running and oxygen-rich rivers. Upon biting, the worm can be transmitted into the subcutaneous tissues of the patient, leading to characteristic darkened nodules. Eventually, worms can migrate into the eyes and lead to damage to eye structures leading to blindness.
