Clonorchiasis (Chinese Liver Fluke) | Infection, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Clonorchiasis is a parasitic infection with the liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis, a trematode that infects the biliary tract in humans. Humans can be infected with this parasite from ingestion of raw or undercooked fish, although contamination on utensils can also be a method of transmission. Clonorchiasis is most common in East Asia, especially in China, Korea and Vietnam, and has been deemed by the World Health Organization to be one of the most neglected tropical diseases. In this lesson, we discuss the life cycle of Clonorchis sinensis, along with how it infects humans, the earliest signs and symptoms, and also some of the long-term consequences including gallstone disease and cancer.
