Back to the AMAZING FUN locomotive shops on our narrow-gauge large-scale indoor-outdoor model railroad.
This week we are back to the ash pit where the cinders from the locomotives are dumped at the end of the day before putting the locomotive away for the day. As the fire is dumped at the end of the day, red hot cinders fall into the pit where they glow for quite some time as they cool off. We are creating that effect with five colored flickering LEDs
(EDGELEC 100 Pcs 5mm yellow Flickering LEDs)
tinted with a “stained glass coloring kit” from Amazon.

Slag from our white metal melting furnace is stacked over the LEDs to create a great hot ash effect.
The ash pit is a concrete pit with tracks supported on steel beams above the pit such that cinders can be dumped from the grates at the bottom of the firebox. The crew can rattle the grates and prod the cinders with poles as they dump the fire from the locomotive. Often the fire e is not completely dumped and the locomotive is put away warm ready to refire the next morning. We are building the pit from extruded styrene foam sides and styrene I beams from Plaststruct.
