Building a turnout from scratch is tricky at best. As we went forward we found several pitfalls to avoid.
Setting the guardrails is the first tricky thing. If you have an NMRA standards gauge this is so much easier. But in our case, there are no standards for #1 gauge, or should I say there are several standards, and unless all of your equipment follows one of those standards following the wrong one will lead to derailments. So we were forced to sort of wing it! Watch and see!
Also, the points (blades) were a bit tricky, mostly because we are installing Llagas Creek point slide rail braces. Either way, holding the stock rails in gauge requires drilling the base of the rails.
