I’ve talked a lot on this channel about my deep love and absolute passion for racing. Whether we’re talking about grinding out laps in sim racing games or watching full-scale, real-world racing, it is in my blood. I absolutely love games like Gran Turismo, and while titles like NASCAR Ignition certainly try (even though we all know it isn't a very good game), sometimes playing on a screen just isn't enough. Sometimes, I just want to get out on the asphalt and race myself.
Now, while I might be a little bit too old—and I definitely don't have the massive budget required—to jump into the driver's seat of a full-size Cup Series race car, I have found the absolute best alternative. If you've been watching the channel recently, a lot of you have noticed the car sitting behind me: the iconic #3 GM Goodwrench fantasy car of the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr. That wasn't just a shelf queen; that was actually my track championship-winning car that I ran and campaigned all of last year!
Well, I am officially at it again. I just added another incredible machine to the RC garage. Say hello to the officially licensed Ryan Blaney 12 Ford Dark Horse Mustang Losi NASCAR Grom Racecar! It's unboxing time!
One of the best things about the Losi NASCAR Grom series is how the whole kit and caboodle comes straight out of the box. It is fully pre-painted, completely pre-assembled, and an absolutely wonderful thing for both beginners and veteran hobbyists.
What’s Inside the Box?
This is a complete "Ready-to-Run" (RTR) package, meaning you literally need nothing else to get started.
The fully assembled 1/12 scale 4WD chassis
A stunning, officially licensed pre-painted polycarbonate body
A high-quality 2.4GHz transmitter (controller)
The brushed motor and waterproof electronics already installed
The rechargeable battery pack
A USB battery charger
Even the AA batteries for the controller are included!
Pulling the body off of the chassis for the first time, I have to say, Losi did a genuinely incredible job replicating Blaney's Midnight-inspired paint scheme here. The details are crisp, and the stance is perfect.
But don't let the small 1/12 scale size fool you—this is a true hobby-grade RC car, not a toy. You can actually do a massive amount of tuning with this platform to get it dialed in for your local track. You can easily swap out the shock oil to adjust the dampening, fine-tune the preload on the springs to raise or lower your ride height, and swap out the springs entirely. While it might not be strictly legal for the specific spec-class rules at my local track, you even have the ability to change the gearing to chase higher top speeds!
The Custom Future of this Chassis
As much as I love the Blaney scheme, this specific chassis is destined for something totally unique. It’s a bit hard to see on camera right now without any paint on it, but I also picked up a clear Chevy Silverado NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series body. I am going to be custom-painting that truck body with a classic Mike Skinner paint scheme to drop right onto this exact Losi Grom platform! It’s the exact same chassis underneath, just a completely different flavor on top.
That begs the question: If I am just going to pull the body off and do a custom Mike Skinner truck build anyway, why did I go out of my way to buy the Ryan Blaney edition? Well, aside from being a stellar driver, Ryan is a massive gamer! He absolutely loves the Nintendo 64, and I actually had the awesome opportunity to work with him in the past at a previous employer. He is a genuinely super nice guy, so I had to represent his car on the channel.
If you want to get into RC oval racing, I cannot recommend these enough. These Losi NASCAR Grom 1/12 scale RTRs are available right now for under $180, which is an insane value. They come in a massive variety of different official paint schemes across the Ford, Chevy, and Toyota camps, so you can rep your favorite driver no matter who it is.
