Have you ever wondered what the original Super Mario Bros. 3 would look like upscaled to crystal-clear, glorious 4K? Well, wonder no more, because today we are pushing real, authentic hardware to its limits! We recently received the highly anticipated PixelFX Morph 4K video upscaler from our friends over at CastlemaniaGames.com, and it is time to put it to the test with one of the greatest platformers of all time. Welcome back to RoXolid Productions—its time for our Pixel FX Morph 4K First test, and we're going to play Super Mario Bros in 4k!!
👾 The Hardware Setup: No Emulation Here
For this test, we are not relying on software emulation; we are using real hardware to get the most authentic experience possible. Specifically, I am running my classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Toploader.
However, this isn't just a stock 8-bit console. My Toploader has been fully HDMI modded, meaning it is natively outputting a beautiful, digital 1080p signal right out of the gate. From there, we are feeding that pristine 1080p signal directly into the PixelFX Morph 4K to let it do the heavy lifting and upscale the image all the way to a stunning 4K resolution. The result? Pure, unadulterated 8-bit magic blown up for modern high-definition displays without losing its soul.
📺 Visual Impressions: Smooth Pixels vs. Scanlines
So, how does the Morph 4K actually handle the visuals? In a word: smooth. Really, really smooth. The retro gaming community is often divided between purists who love the look of thick CRT scanlines and those who prefer razor-sharp, modern pixels. Personally, I am a massive fan of smooth pixels—I don't generally care for using artificial scanlines to mask the image. The Morph 4K caters perfectly to this preference, delivering incredibly crisp edges and a flawlessly clean picture that makes Mario pop off the screen.
I did notice one interesting detail regarding the color palette during this test: to my eye, the colors look just a little bit on the "burnt" or reddish side. It’s not a completely washed-out hue by any means, but there is definitely a distinct red tint to the overall image when scaling this specific setup. It's something we'll keep an eye on as we continue testing and tweaking the settings, but overall, the visual presentation is nothing short of fantastic.
⚡ Gameplay Performance: Zero Lag Platforming
Of course, in a legendary game like Super Mario Bros. 3, visual fidelity means absolutely nothing if there is input lag. 2D platformers require pixel-perfect precision, and I am thrilled to report that the PixelFX Morph 4K completely delivers.
When I press a button on the controller, I feel the game respond absolutely instantaneously. The upscaling process seems to introduce no perceptible latency whatsoever. Every jump, every fireball, and every dodge feels exactly as it should—even if I did accidentally kick that Koopa Troopa shell in the entirely wrong direction during the capture! The responsiveness is exactly what you want when playing on original hardware.
