Hi there, and thanks for joining. Today I wanted to talk about a concept called “Productive Procrastination.” There are a lot of reasons why at the end of the day a lot of us will say, “I didn’t accomplish anything that I set out to do today.” And they run the gammut from emergencies that crop up, to prioritization, that sort of thing. But one of the things that we fall into as leaders is we don’t do the important things, the hard things, because we shift our focus onto things of low to medium importance that we want to do. Think about the people who don’t clean the house, but organize their CD collection, to date myself a little bit. Or an example I like to use is the firemen showing up to a burning house, but watering the lawn first because “that needs to get done.” So you get a lot of things accomplished, but you don’t accomplish what you set out to do. You’re productive, but you’re procrastinating. The way to overcome this is to bite the bullet and take the first step. It’s the first step that sets up the momentum. There is the old Pareto Principle that 80% of the benefit of something comes from 20% of the work. So if you can get something started, if you can take the first step in an activity, opening up Excel, titling the document, laying out the outline for the report. Those simple things. It’s easier to build some momentum and get those things moving. And when you can get that 20% of the work done, and see the 80% of the benefit. It’s easier to keep going and finish the project. So when you look at the task that you have to do and the goals that you set for the day, just get started. If you get started, you’ll build the momentum, and you won’t have those incidences where you didn’t accomplish anything you wanted to do today. Thanks, have a good one.
