Hi there everyone, and thanks for joining me today. A question I received in one of my Live Q&A sessions was whether or not it was important for the leader to understand how to do each team member’s job. And I thought it was a great question and I wanted to dive a little deeper into it in one of these sessions. The quick answer is “No” they don’t need to know how to do everybody’s job. Think about CEOs and Vice Presidents who have oversight over large organizations, they certainly don’t understand how everybody does their jobs. But what I will tell you is that it helps. It helps in setting expectations, it helps in leading by example, it helps in knowing what you need to look for in opportunities, problems, that sort of thing. Knowing how to do people’s jobs is important to round out your understanding of how to use them best. And that’s what a leader is really tasked with. Utilizing the team’s strengths to benefit the overall organization. I mean, if you think about it, every new leader that comes into a company doesn’t know how to do their team’s jobs. They don’t know how to work with the systems their working with, they don’t know who to contact in accounting or wherever else to get the information that they need. But what they do do is they do learn. They learn how to do those jobs, they learn which ones are important, and they do that deep dive. So the quick answer is “No” a leader doesn’t have to understand how to do everybody’s job, but the leader should be learning, constantly learning to greater depths of what every member of their team does, so that they can utilize the resources they’ve been entrusted with to the best of their abilities, and that’s what leadership is all about. Thanks so much everyone, have a great day.
