☠️ Portuguese Man o’ War – Beautiful but Dangerous at the beach of Wainning (Hanai Island/China) by 燕子
The Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia physalis) may look like a jellyfish, but it is actually a floating colony of specialized organisms. Its blue-purple gas-filled float works like a sail, carrying it across warm ocean waters.
Long venomous tentacles hang below the surface and are used to catch small fish and crustaceans.
For humans, a sting is usually extremely painful but rarely fatal, causing burning pain, red marks and swelling. Even dead or washed-up animals can still sting.
Natural predators include loggerhead sea turtles, ocean sunfish, violet sea snails and blanket octopuses.
A stunning reminder that ocean beauty can hide real danger.
