An underwater spring hidden beneath the sandy bottom of a tributary of Brazil’s Araguaia River filmed by Juliana @caminhosdesconhecidos 🇧🇷
Rainwater infiltrates the porous soils and sandstone layers of the Cerrado, where it is stored underground. Under pressure, this groundwater rises through the riverbed, lifting the fine sand and creating the appearance of a gently “boiling” surface.
These submerged springs are extremely important. They help maintain stream flow during the dry season, create stable microhabitats with relatively constant temperatures, and supply clean water to the surrounding ecosystem. The flowing sand and oxygenated transition zones also provide habitat for microorganisms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and fish.
They are a visible connection between the underground water reserves of the Cerrado and the rivers of the Araguaia basin.
