Hi Guys and Gals here we have the Sodor 3D map set from Plarail (Takara TOMY). I got this on ebay as a pre order and it was around $130 which is not cheap as it would probably sell for half that in the Asian retail environment. Anyway a decent set :D
The back of the box shows you some typical track designs which can be incorporated with this set as long as you have the extra rails to build it! That's right it doesn't come with any extra rails or any of the locomotives pictured on the box except for the new Plarail Thomas. So as long as you have extra TOMY track or Trackmaster Track with adapters you can extend this set to be as large as you wish.
The track can run 2 ways:
1) around the top loop and off the cliffs with your extra track.
2) through the bottom of the quarry (need your own track completely though)
I found a glaring problem with the number 2 route through the bottom of the quarry and that is that the tunnels are very low hanging and some engines don't fit (even unmodified ones), This is quite a problem and the few mm of cardboard under the track in this area makes it worse.
The set comes with a standard Plarail Thomas of the newer type with eyes looking off to the side and a static model of Owen the truck lift. Owen is nice but I did not add the decals to complete him before filming so what you see in the video is not an accurate representation of Plarail Owen.
So a good set and I had fun running trains on the garage floor for a change and hopefully if you get this set you will have fun too!
I give this set a 7/10 The problem with the tunnels being too small is a BIG problem and I hope that TOMY have a good look at this as it ruins play value allot. I am not sure how a product like this can find its way to the marketplace with a huge problem like that. Although Bertram seemed to like working in the lower quarry allot!
